These are the words that essentially started the idea for this site. Because we all have rocky roads, whether or not our lives appear perfect from someone else's perspective, we all struggle with at least one thing we wish we could overcome or move beyond.


Heartbreak, setbacks, and challenges that at times feel insurmountable are all obstacles. But the truth is, no matter how many obstacles fall into your path or how tough the road becomes, you have the strength to rise above and beyond.


Here are three daily practices of self-care that may have the potential to help you heal, grow, and move beyond some of life's rocky roads:


Be Kind to Yourself and Embrace a Morning Mindset of Self-Love


Even when you're feeling defeated, choosing to start your day with self-love can set the tone for everything that follows. Choosing to begin your day with words of kindness to yourself can make a significant difference, especially when, throughout the day, you recall that first moment. It can be as simple as closing your eyes, smiling, and saying:


"I am enough. I have the strength to face any challenge. I am worthy of peace and joy."

You don't have to be 100% confident in these words as you're saying them—that's not the purpose. The power of speaking them aloud plants the seeds of change, and everything grows from there. Even on days when you feel like you're not where you want to be, remind yourself that life is a journey and this is only one moment, reminding you that healing is a process.


I like to keep a framed inspirational quote next to my bed so it's one of the first things I see when I turn on the bedside light in the morning. Something similar might work for you. It's best to start the day without electronics, but if that's your preference, try setting up your device so the first thing you see when you turn it on is a calming video or an affirmation of self-care.


Nourish Your Body for Today and Tomorrow


Your body carries you through every single challenge you face, and an important part of self-care, in addition to mental and emotional healing, is honoring the physical body. What you put into your body and how you treat it can have a profound effect on your mood, energy, and overall sense of well-being.


Nourishing foods that fuel your body and make you feel strong are a great first step—even if you can't give up that one thing you love (for me, it's dark chocolate). This doesn't mean you should find and follow the "perfect" diet that everyone is talking about, because beyond the obvious healthy eating, each person is a little different, and what works for one might not work for another. It's important to consult with your doctor when making significant changes to your diet.


Drinking water, resting when needed, and listening to your body's cues will help you regain the energy needed to move past difficult times.


Self-care isn't about perfection. It's about treating yourself with respect, even when life feels messy.


Create Space For Healing, Daily Reflection, or Meditation


When life has thrown you enough bumps in the road, be they pebbles or boulders, you might convince yourself it's easier to push your emotions aside because they're too much or too hard to process. Yet true healing comes when we make space to feel and then release what's weighing on us.


Carve out just ten minutes a day for reflection. You don't need a fancy meditation room, just a quiet spot and a willingness to be present in the moment. This could be through journaling, where you write down your thoughts, frustrations, and hopes. Or, you can try a simple meditation practice of sitting in stillness and breathing while you focus on the rise and fall of your breath, and with each exhale, release judgment and with each inhale, welcome peace.


If you've dealt with your own rocky road, remember this: healing is a constant journey, and it's okay to take your time. The road ahead of you is still filled with hope, possibility, and growth.

Start with kindness. Start with nourishment. Start with reflection.


You are not defined by your setbacks, but rather your willingness to rise each day and keep going, no matter the rocks and turns along the way. Be gentle with yourself and celebrate every victory.
